The High School Application Process for 2020-2021

The High School Application Process for 2020-2021 presented by your school counselors: Ms. Soto and Mr. Burstein.
 

Important Dates to Remember!

 
  • SHSAT Registration Opens: December 21, 2020
  • SHSAT Registration DeadlineJanuary 15, 2021
  • SHSAT Date: January 27, 2021
  • Laguardia High School Auditions Registration Opens: December 21, 2020
  • Laguardia High School Auditions Deadline: February 23, 2021
  • High School Application Opens: Week of January 19, 2021
  • High School Application Deadline: February 23, 2021

Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT)

 
  • The SHSAT is a three hour exam (no break) consisting of 114 questions testing your knowledge in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
  • Every eighth grader is eligible to register for this exam.
  • For students with extended time accommodations: 6 hours with two 15 minutes breaks

Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT)

  • You may begin registering for the SHSAT on Monday, December 21st using your Myschools online account.
  • The deadline for registering for the exam is January 15, 2021.

LaGuardia High School AUDITIONS

 
  • LaGuardia High School is a school which requires you to register in order to audition for one or more of the following programs: dance, drama, instrumental music, fine arts, technical theater, and vocal music.
  • During registration, indicate which program(s) the student will audition for.
  • You may begin registering for LaGuardia auditions on Monday December 21st using your Myschools online account.
  • The deadline to register is February 23, 2021.

Submitting Audition Files

 
  • All auditions will take place remotely. Submit audition files through the Virtual Audition Submission Tool by March 1, 2021.
  • This year, applicants’ academic record (attendance, punctuality, course grades, standardized test scores) will not be used for admission to audition programs(except for LaGuardia)

High School Programs

 
  • 12 programs maximum, 6 programs minimum
  • Apply to one or more programs in the same HS
  • List programs in your true order of preference, starting with your top choice - High schools cannot see the order of programs on a student’s application
  • What happens if you receive no offer from your list?
    • No 2nd round offers
    • The DOE will choose your high school
    • Waitlists (waitlist offers go through the summer)

Deadline to submit HS Application: February 23, 2021

  • Clubs/activities
  • AP classes
  • Location - how far from home?

Screened programs

 

  • Screened programs will use a combination of sixth grade final class averages, sixth grade ELA/Math state exam scores, and seventh grade class averages (from September through February)
  • Examples of Screened Programs include:
    • Midwood’s medical science and humanities programs
    • Leon Goldstein High School science program
    • Fort Hamilton HONORS program

***every screened program will choose their own method for screening students. You must check Myschools and research each schools method of screening their students***

Educational Option (EdOpt) Programs

 
  • Ed. Opt. programs admit students across all academic levels
  • Students are grouped into Low, Middle, and High categories
    • Based on a composite of their academic data from the prior two years
  • One-third of offers are made to students in each category

Screened Language Programs

 
  • If you are fluent in another language you may apply to a screen language program
  • Please research if the high school you are interested in offers the language you are fluent in
  • Examples:
    • Must be fluent in Spanish to apply for Murrow’s Spanish Program
    • Must be fluent in Haitian Creole to apply for Midwood’s Haitian Creole Program

  • High School Directory: offers information on all high schools in the city
  • MySchools Website (https://www.myschools.nyc/): Provides in depth information on each school
  • Individual high school’s website: If you are interested in a specific school, visit their website.
