Blended learning model for the fall of 2020

July 20, 2020

Dear Cavallaro Families,

We are committed to providing your children with the safest educational environment, while maintaining high academic expectations.

At the current time, given the mandates from the DOE and Department of Health, all NYC schools are required to select a blended learning model for the fall of 2020 to safely open schools. After meeting with the Instructional Leadership Team and School Leadership Team, we have decided to adopt the following blended learning model:

Model 1A

Each class will be split into two groups, A and B. Based upon our student population and classroom square footage, each group will be assigned a classroom that safely fits their capacity, as determined by the CDC and NYC Division of School Planning and Development. Each group will have 2 consistent days a week of “in school” instructional time, then alternate Monday’s.

Please note the following:

-During “In school” days (noted above), students will be learning new material taught by their teachers. During “at home” remote days, students will be working in Google Classroom on independent review and assignments, reinforcing the previous days’ material and preparing for the next day’s lesson.

-**It is imperative that students follow the same schedule all 5 days each week, whether in school or at home, to ensure the continuity of instruction and maintain a consistent educational routine.

-Due to the fact that each classroom has a different space capacity, classes may be programmed to have more than one teacher and movement must be limited due to health concerns, students will remain in their assigned room and teachers will circulate from class to class in cohort groups.

-Impt…If you choose to keep your child home to receive full remote instruction, they must remain remote. You will be permitted to switch your child back to “in school” learning on a quarterly basis.

-Students from the same family within Cavallaro will be programmed and assigned to the same group, A or B. This way, families can plan to have their kids in school and at home following the same schedule.

-All families will know what group their child is assigned to prior to the start of school. We will also be conducting a 6th grade orientation, which is usually scheduled the week before the first day of school.

-At this time, we still have not received the DOE school year calendar, information about what subjects will be taught during “in school” instructional time, a daily time schedule, lunch or transportation procedures, mask mandates or health guidelines. As soon as this information is released by the DOE, I will communicate it to you.

-If you wish to have your child fully remote, please fill out this survey. If you DO NOT fill out the survey, your child will be assigned to a Group for “in school/remote” blended learning schooling.

I know we are in uncertain times and there are still many unanswered questions. As I have said before, we will continue to work through this together to ensure our Cavallaro students receive the best possible education in the safest environment given the current circumstances.

Please feel free to reach out to me via Pupilpath or email at mbender4@schools.nyc.gov with any questions or concerns.

Genuinely,

Ms. Bender
