Weekly Update For Families - October, 12th

Cav was all dressed in Pink last week in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Our next celebration will be tomorrow October 13, which is “National Stop Bullying Day”. We invite everyone in the school to wear Blue for UNITY.

Friday, October 15, we will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. This is a time to recognize all of the wonderful contributions of the Hispanic community; from food and dance, to traditions and celebrations. We invite all within our school community to dress in the vibrant colors representing the flags Hispanic countries, and join in celebrating the richness of their culture.

As we are well into the month of October, I would like to remind everyone of the importance of being on time and present each and every day. The attendance team at I.S. 281 is making a special effort to ensure all students fully benefit from their education by attending school regularly. Showing up for school has a high impact on a student’s academic success starting in Kindergarten and continuing through High School. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and in life. We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health or other circumstances. However, we also know students who miss too much school – regardless of reason – it can cause them to fall behind. Please reach out to our school’s attendance team with any further questions.

Voting will be taking place tomorrow to fill the positions of our 6th Grade Secretary, 7th grade Vice President, and 8th grade Student Body President. Each grade will have a specified google drive containing candidate videos, to be viewed by students during Social Studies. After viewing the candidate speech videos, students will cast their votes via Google Forms. Good luck to all of our candidates!

All staff and students are to remain masked while among others at all times in the building except while eating, i.e., during instructional time, while walking in the hallway, etc. If a student is not properly wearing their mask throughout the school day, they will be instructed to adjust. If they consistently are defiant of this policy, this will be reported to the dean, as the failure to properly wear a mask is in the Chancellors’ Discipline Code.

Classroom desks must consistently be arranged to maximize the full capacity of the room in order to maintain 3 feet of distance between students when possible. Students are not permitted to move their seats or desks closer to one another in the classroom.
