NYC DOE Multi-Tiered Systems of Support Initiative

After conducting the ELA i-Ready and San Diego Quick initial diagnostics in September, then administering secondary screeners to all of those students who scored below grade level, then grouping them into phonics, vocabulary or comprehension groups in October, our student cohort A,B,C,D groupings are now in place and the 6-8 week progress monitoring cycle is underway.

As explained in the beginning of the year, students are grouped in cohorts based upon what they need as detailed:
  • Tier I students (on grade level) are using Stari for a teacher-led book club extension.
  • Tier III students (3 or more grade levels below) are receiving pull-out services by AIS teachers based upon which service they need. (ie. Phonics: Phonics for Reading; Vocabulary: Rewards; Comprehension: Spire Next)
  • I-Ready mid-year diagnostics administered in January will give us the data to move kids from Tier III to Tier II and Tier II up to Tier I if they have achieved grade level proficiency. This is why we impress upon students the Importance of taking the i-ready diagnostics seriously and not rushing through.
Please note, on a students schedule, attendance will not be reflected in Jupiter during the child's WIN period (listed on student programs as A,B,C,D depending on their cohort). During that period, teachers will be taking attendance for their individual group of students using Branching Minds, which is the District 21 platform for AIS progress monitoring.

Individual letters will be distributed to families next week, detailing their child's i-Ready results, as well as their notification from Branching Minds pertaining to their Tier. If you have any further questions once you receive their learning path information, you may contact your child's Assistant Principal.

Thank you so much. We are interested to see the IMPACT of MTSS on student learning overall academic progress in literacy.

Sincerely,
Ms. Bender
