Friday, we held our Student of the Month breakfast to honor those who excelled in ELA during the month of October. A special thank you to our helpers who assisted with the breakfast, as well as our ELA teachers for the submission of Literary Superstars. The ELA department also began assessing the passage of the week. Similar to the math department’s problem of the week, the passages and questions selected come directly from ELA state test questions

Cav hosted the District 21 Parent Coordinator meeting on Wednesday in the Library. The Central Crisis Support Team of the Office of Safety and Youth Development led an informative session on “Creating Safety and Belonging through Trauma-Informed Practices”. The American Heart Association also shared an important presentation on teaching children when and how to call 911 in an emergency. It was a productive and meaningful event. A shout out to our own Parent Coordinator, Ms. Chris, for graciously hosting and representing our school so well.

The annual ENL Family “Meet & Greet” was held Thursday and serves to strengthen the connection with our ENL families. During this event, topics discussed included NYSELAT/NYSITELL language proficiency levels, the different learning platforms that students use, and how to navigate the Department of Education website as well as Jupiter Ed. This was a wonderful opportunity to connect, ask questions, and learn how we can work together to support our Multilingual Learners. Shout out to Ms. Mohassib and our ENL teachers for their dedication to our families.

616, 617, and 623 went on a trip to the NY Hall of Science with Ms. Balacich and Ms. Travis. They visited the "Powering the City" exhibit, where they learned about the different forms of energy that make NYC happen. Some students said their favorite part was the Sound Energy room where they got to scream loudly to see how much sound energy they produced. They also spent time in the Design Lab, building prototypes to help astronauts keep their food and games from floating away on the ISS, designing a new wing for a bird, and helping a T-Rex pick something out of its teeth.

Thank you to our visitors from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden last week. Urban Advantage botanists with Project Green Reach shared their field work with Class 813 and 817. Shout out to Mr. Yodice, Mr. Baroutsos and Ms. Abdelwahab for arranging. Classes are investigating desert plants, their adaptations and ways to propagate them. After dissecting succulents, every student got to pot their own hedgehog aloes, which will be cared for as a class
